Remove the following code block:

magento/magento2/blob/2.2.6/app/code/Magento/Ui/view/frontend/web/js/view/messages.js#L65-L72

// Hide message block if needed
if (isHidden) {
    setTimeout(function () {
        $(self.selector).hide('blind', {}, 500);
    }, 5000);
}

Then re-deploy the static content.

Customer error messages disappear too fast
