[PostFinance] How do the various payment procedures differ?

Three possible payment procedures are available:

  1. Direct sale: following a successful authorisation, i.e. once the transaction amount has been successfully reserved on the customer’s credit card, our systems immediately request the payment/transfer of the amount.
The two transaction steps, authorisation and data capture, are both handled by our system and are transparent for the merchant. This procedure is often used for goods or services delivered online.
  • Automatic authorisation and payment on request: our system only requests an authorisation.
The money remains on the customer’s account, but is reserved (blocked) for the merchant.
To instruct the blocked amount to be transferred to his bank account, the merchant must start his administration module and request the payment for the specific transaction.
This procedure is often used when a merchant first needs to check for sufficient stocks before dispatching the ordered merchandize.
  • Automatic payment after X days: our system requests an authorization after X days; if the merchant has not cancelled the authorisation up to that date, we will automatically request the payment. If X=0, the payment procedure is identical to that of a “direct sale”, as we request the payment immediately on successful authorization.
Please bear in mind that the possibility of a two-step payment process depends on the payment methods you wish to use. Please refer to the “Payment Methods Processing/Procedure” documentation for an overview.
